Out with the New

December 31, 2020

Debra Ross

I had a nice simple publisher's column planned for today. My thought was that there was so little I wanted to bring from this year into the next that I was just going to write something like: "Adios, 2020. Don't let the screen door hit ya on the backside on your way out," hunt down some eggnog, and call it a day. But then my family watched Soul, the new Pixar movie, and it totally messed with my plans (and, consequently, with our editorial staff's schedule—apologies, ladies!).

Soul, starring Jamie Foxx, was originally scheduled for release in theaters in June, but Pixar instead premiered it on Disney+ last week so we could all stream it safely from home. If your family would prefer to close 2020 with a movie whose tag line is "Life is full of possibilities, you just have to know where to look," and whose message can be summed up in a quote from its main character: "Get ready, your life is about to start"... well, then gather the kids and all the adults in your pod (animated movies are not just for kids!), plunk down your $7 for a month of Disney+, and press PLAY. Don't close your eyes or you'll miss animated artistry at a level that will set the standard for future generations, and don't close your ears or you'll miss the amazing jazz you didn't know your heart was craving.

So listen up, 2020! While we humans take Soul and run with it into a future where life is still full of possibilities, y'all can just stay back in the house. Got it?

And get ready, people, a better year is about to start.
